Basilica is a one-year species in the family wreath plants and is used as a spice plant. The most common basil, grown in the Mediterranean region, is the most often used for flavoring of meat and fish dishes, spaghetti, salads, vegetables and soups. It can be either fresh or dried in use. Basilica is also an important component of Pesto - a basil-based sauce with olive oil, garlic, parmesan cheese and pine nuts. You should not confuse ordinary basil with Thai variety - Thaibasilika. The Thaibasilica differs significantly in both taste and appearance. It also has a strong licorious scent. The Thaibasilica has an important role in Asian cooking and if it is only basil in an Asian recipe, one can assume that it is the Asian variant that is meant and it is not possible to replace with ordinary basil.
