Basilica is a one -year species in the family of wreath -flowered plants and is used as a spice plant. The most common basilica grown in the Mediterranean region is the one most commonly used for seasoning meat and fish dishes, spaghetti, salads, vegetables and soups. It can be either fresh or dried when used. Basilica is also an important element in Pesto - a basil -based sauce with olive oil, garlic, parmesan cheese and pine nuts. One should not confuse regular basil with the Thai variety - Thaibasilika. The Thaibasilica differs markedly in both taste and appearance. It also has a strong licorice scent. Thaibasilica has an important role in Asian cooking and if it is only basil in an Asian recipe then you can assume that it is the Asian variant that is meant and it cannot be replaced with ordinary basil.
